Kickstarting Your Local SEO

When you enter your favorite keyword in the Google Search bar do you see the results that you used to see? I am going to guess, probably not. Most likely we are seeing the effects of Google tightening the radius around where we can rank and get our listing next to a coveted red balloon.

If you are not ranking where you want to rank and can’t just open up another office in that town the next best thing you can do is some good old fashioned local SEO. Start with a full SEO audit of your website. You may find out there are some deficiencies with your site that needs fixing, don’t ignore them. Take the time to make sure they are done right. I can’t tell you how many times I have looked at a site that needs some serious technical work done before any real off-site work can begin.

Then once you have all your ducks in a row with your on-site optimization it is imperative you take a look at Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools to see what users are actually typing during their search. You may find you are right off the first page or on the bottom of it for some really great keywords, those are the ones to go after. You might realize you have to re-optimize a page or two on your website but it will be well worth it for those extra clicks.

So once you are all squared away with your on-site optimization let’s hunt down those all important red balloons we have come to cherish. Google + for business is pretty much a mandatory tool for businesses to rank locally. You may have the old Google Places dashboard but don’t worry there is a one-click merger coming soon, Ray Hiltz from SteamFeed gives you the low down. After that, it is all about relevant quality content being updated to your Google + page. Please don’t forget the relevant and quality part. There’s also this thing called Google Authorship you will want to be a part of when making your post so get a good a headshot and don’t forget to smile.

Then the link building can begin. So if you want to get a head start on the competition here in South Jersey go ahead and invest in your website with local SEO.
